1:1 Richard Cave
Founder of Cave Decorative Arts
How did you come to start Cave Decorative Arts?
With over 25 years of experience with Malletts in London and New York, I set up on my own in 2016, to continue to deal in the decorative arts, albeit in a much smaller way.
How would you describe your signature aesthetic?
Pieces of great charm and beauty, with heaps of workmanship and drawing, that will complement their surroundings.
Do you have a favorite piece that you have acquired or sold?
A treasured piece - not for sale - is a late 19th century English occasional table, in the Moorish style and made from a piece of Durham Cathedral oak, the top inset with an early 17th century border tile from Damascus. A perfect example of recycling and one that escaped the cataloguer’s attention. A favorite piece I sold - a George II mahogany tea table bearing the trade label for Elizabeth Bell & Son, of St Paul’s Churchyard, London. It is now in an office in the City, a stone’s throw away from where it was originally made.
Your gallery is in Holland Park - what is your favorite thing about the area?
Holland Park Avenue and its trees.
Are there any particular places that you’re really drawn to or excited by?
Cornwall and all the properties belonging to the owners of The Newt in Somerset.
What do you love the most about your work?
Placing a piece within someone’s existing collection and seeing it resonate.
Any upcoming projects you’d like to share?
The ongoing exhibition at the gallery, of Kim Knott’s exquisite botanical photographs.
